Approximately thirty percent of their transactions are handled through either their website through their app or both. Ru says “Technology has always been apart of our DNA.”

 

Nathaniel Ru and his co-founders are also thinking of new strategies for management. For example, in order to connect and stay connected to their customers, Sweetgreen closes virtually all of their corporate offices five times per year in order to allow everyone to work in the restaurants. Sweetgreen recently opened new corporate offices in Los Angeles, CA. There are no headquarters of Sweetgreen. Ru says “We don’t believe in corporate headquarters. We want to decentralize our head count.”

 

Nathaniel Ru and his co founders and co CEOs have a few things in common. One thing is that they all attended an entrepreneurship classes together at Georgetown University. Second, they all saw the need for healthier foods in their community. Third, they collaborated and opened Sweetgreen for the good of others, and they all have first generation immigrant parents who have all started their own businesses.

 

The CEO trio knew they would be successful when they survived the first winter break after graduating from college and all the students left for vacation and they thrived.

 

“Fortune” asked Nathaniel Ru what advice he would give to his younger self. Ru responded “I would read more books. Even more than you think you have time for.” When asked what he thought the hardest thing was about management, Ru indicated that the three of them knew and did everything in the company. “The hardest thing was to form a team around usand let go of some of the work.”
